Water Heater Leaking – DIY, or Call the Professionals at Magic Plumbing?
There comes a time when even the most reliable of products comes to the end of the line, and if you have a water heater leaking all over the place, then it may be running out of time.
Of course, that won’t always be the case. Water heater leaking can be because of poorly fitted water heaters; so you may have to get the company back in to get it fixed. If, however, you’d prefer not to get back the people who didn’t manage to install it correctly in the first place, and would rather try to repair it yourself, then you may just be interested in a few tips that could help you out; before you end up calling in Magic Plumbing, that is.
What tools do you need to stop the water heater leaking?
The first thing that you’re going to have to do is to get the right tools for the job. In fact, you should have them just incase the problem of a water heater leaking ever does happen, anyway. You don’t want to leave this DIY project half-done. One reason for that is the lack of hot water; another reason is the fact that tackling anything that involves gas can be dangerous, leaving it half-done, therefore, can be lethal. Are you still ready to try it yourself?
The tools that you’ll need to stop your water heater leaking are a length of hose, a screwdriver, a wrench, some sealant, and the all-important bucket. Is that easy enough so far?
Let’s stop the water heater leaking
Now, assuming that you aren’t going to call in a professional, and you’ve evacuated the family; it’s time to get started. The first thing you need to do is switch off the gas. Next is to locate your water shut off valve. If you have a valve on the water leading directly in to your water heater, you can just shut that off instead. If you don’t have a separate valve for the water heater, see about getting one installed; as it can save you a lot of time and trouble if you do have a water heater leaking all over your nice floors.
Having second thoughts? It’s not too late to call in a professional company with over 30 years of experience, and hundreds of happy customers. If the water heater leaking has inspired you to fix it yourself, we’ll continue with what you need to know; but have the phone handy.
The next step in stopping the water heater leaking
Iis to find out where the water is coming from. If you have a water tank, and it is right beside the water heater – not all of them are – then it may take you a little longer to find out what’s leaking.
Some people will tell you that you’ll have to replace the water tank, if that’s what’s leaking; but there are sealants available that block small leaks, and dry hard, despite being in contact with water. These sealants often start as two compounds; you then combine the two compounds to form a putty-like substance. Just remember not to get it on your hands.
If the tank is the problem, and you use this solution, you’ll solve your water heater leaking problems. Although this solution works well, and lasts for a long time, you should still get a professional company in to repair the problem properly.
If that’s not the cause of the water heater leaking, you may have to get a bit more ‘down and dirty’.
Always remember, you have the phone and Magic Plumbing’s number; there’s no shame in using it.
You’re going to have to drain the water – or what’s left of it – to relieve some pressure from the system; this is where you need the hose and bucket. Attach the hose to the sillcock valve (a faucet looking device below the water heater) and start draining. This may take some time, and a few trips outside with the bucket, so finding a way to get one end of the hose outside is advisable if you want to save yourself some time and energy.
You’re getting closer to stopping the problem of the water heater leaking.
When you’ve relieved the pressure, you’ll need to unscrew the unions to disconnect the water output and intake. Is everything still going swimmingly? Before you tighten the valves, and other fittings, it would be a good idea to apply some sealant.
Now, if everything has gone correctly, you should have stopped the water heater leaking. Of course, you may have to wait until you’ve turned everything back on before you find out for sure. If you find that you still have a water heater leaking everywhere, it’s time to make a call, and get the professionals involved.
